July 1, 2017 marks 150 years since Confederation in Canada. CBC Books is creating the Great Canadian Reading List — a list of 150 books curated by you.
Hance Colburne, host of Information Morning Saint John(external link), adds Mabel Murple by Sheree Fitch, illustrated by Sydney Smith, to the reading list.
"While I have been drawn into the worlds of so many wonderful Canadian authors over the years, I've now found the most meaningful Canadian books are the ones I've been able to share with my children. In particular, the works of Sheree Fitch. Her Kisses Kisses Baby-O! was included in small, cloth bag of books sent home with our newborn to encourage reading. It not only did that, but it encouraged us to find more of Sheree's work. And it's Sheree's Mabel Murple which has a treasured spot on our shelf, with its purple prose and whimsical illustrations by Sydney Smith. When parents enjoy a book as much as their kids is a testament to the creativity of the author. Now, the kids read it to us. And it's a joy every time."
Hance Colburne is the host of Information Morning Saint John(external link), which broadcasts to listeners from Grand Manan to Sussex, N.B. every weekday morning.
