New roof, dressing room upgrades also on wish list
A community in eastern P.E.I. is planning fundraisers for its 40-year-old sports centre and arena.
Everything's starting to add up now. - Ken Burt
Ken Burt, manager of the Eastern Kings Sportsplex in Souris, P.E.I., said the upgrades are needed, but it will be a challenge. Typically the sportsplex budget just covers operating costs.
"Our Zamboni now is 22 years old. It caused us a lot of problems last year. Our lights need to be changed, they're the old-fashioned kind, and the dressing rooms have got to be done," said Burt.
"Everything's starting to add up now. The facility, I think it was '76 or '77 and it's been running since.
Things have just started to build up and it has to be addressed."
It's getting harder to find replacement parts for the old lights, he said, and a new roof will be needed soon.
Burt is feeling confident, however, that the community will pull together to get done what needs to be done.
