Coach credits Summerside junior golf program for strength of players
Five young female golfers from the Summerside, P.E.I., area are vying for a spot at the Canada Summer Games in Winnipeg in July.
Mya Chisholm, Reese MacDonald, Lexi Murphy, Jordan Power and Jordan Connell are all coached by Dallas Desjardins and train at the P.E.I. Oceanview Resort in Summerside.
P.E.I.'s team will have six players in all, three male and three female. At most, only three out of the five eligible players will compete at the games.
All from Summerside area
The players Desjardins coaches represent P.E.I.'s official training team for the Canada Games, however it is possible other individual players could qualify.
Desjardins is excited to see such strong talent come from the Summerside area.
"The unique feature is all five of these girls are from the old Summerside golf club junior team," Desjardins said.
According to Desjardins, the 15 and 16-year old players are all highly skilled multi-sport athletes.
Multi-skilled athletes
"They play rugby, they play badminton. They're tremendous athletes, so it was pretty easy for them to pick up golf clubs," Desjardins said. "And since they have been swinging now for the last eight years at least, they have some great talent on the course."
Desjardins said the calibre of his students is due in part to the strong junior golf program in Summerside, which began in 2009.
"We have been seeing a lot of great talent … due to the program," he said.
The players have begun the process of qualifying for the games and Desjardins said he expects to find out in July who is picked to play for team P.E.I.
