Hamilton's McMaster University announced Tuesday that CBC's chief correspondent and anchor, Peter Mansbridge and his wife, actor Cynthia Dale will be receiving honorary degrees next month.

Mansbridge and Dale are set to receive the degrees at a June 12 convocation ceremony honouring figures in culture, science and medicine.

In a video message, Mansbridge expressed both his and Dale's gratitude for receiving the honour.

"I just want to tell you how deeply excited both my wife, Cynthia Dale, and I are to be considered worthy of honorary degrees this year at McMaster," said Mansbridge.

McMaster will also honour actor-director, Sarah Polley and internationally and nationally prominent figures in science, engineering and the liberal arts.

"We're well aware of McMaster's reputation, not just around Canada, but around the world, and (to) have our names associated with such a great institution is very special indeed," said Mansbridge.

Cynthia Dale is a television and stage actor best known for her roles in Street Legal and at the Stratford Festival.

Mansbridge has anchored CBC's flagship newscast, The National since 1988 and is set to retire after his final broadcast July 1, when the country will mark its 150th birthday.

He currently serves as the chancellor of Mount Allison University in New Brunswick.
