During World War I, thousands of Canadian women volunteered to go overseas to serve as nursing sisters. Two of those women are Meta Hodge (who signs up after losing two brothers on the front) and Eleanor Thompson.
The pair become the first Canadian women to win the Military Medal for their bravery after their hospital is hit by a German bomb; ignoring their own injuries, they pull themselves out of the rubble and rush the wounded soldiers to safety.
