On Wednesday, Greg White announced he was back on the case.
Bird, who appeared on closed-circuit TV from the Lethbridge Correctional Centre, is charged with attempted murder, aggravated sexual assault, sexual assault with a weapon, aggravated assault, break and enter and several counts of mischief.
Life-threatening injuries
Police have said a man struck a woman with a weapon last September and dragged her into an alley where he sexually assaulted her.
She was discovered by a passerby and taken to hospital with life-threatening injuries.
She was released in late January and her family has said she has to relearn how to walk and talk as she continues her recovery at home in Lethbridge.
Bird has not had a bail hearing and remains in custody by his own consent. The case has been adjourned until May.
