Charmaine Hooper, the most experienced international soccer player in Canadian history, added another honour to her list of career accolades Thursday.
The 35-year-old veteran was the lone Canadian named to the FIFA women's World Cup all-star team.
Hooper, who has been a striker most of her career, was recognized at the defence position. Hooper moved to a defensive role shortly before the World Cup began.
"I was surprised," said Hooper. "It's a position I have never played. I had to laugh. I've never been a defender before. To be selected to the all-star team, it's pretty funny."
Hooper counted two goals in the tournament, including the crucial header that gave Canada a 1-0 quarter-final victory over the favoured Chinese.
Canada has one game remaining in the tournament - Saturday's third-place game against the United States.
Germany dominated 16-player all-star team. Five Germans made the squad, including goalkeeper Silke Rottenberg, strikers Birgit Prinz and Maren Meinert, defender Sandra Minnert and midfielder Bettina Wiegmann.
Sweden had three named to the team including striker Victoria Svensson, goalkeeper Caroline Joensson and midfielder Malin Mostroem.
Americans Joy Fawcett, striker Mia Hamm and midfielder Shannon Boxx were also named all-stars.
Rounding out the team were Norwegians midfielder Solveig Gulbrandsen and forward Dagny Mellgren, defender Liping Wang of China and Brazilian midfielder Marta.
A FIFA technical study group selected the all-star team.
