Students at Lake Melville school in North West River were showing off projects about their history, families and culture Monday morning at their annual heritage fair.
Grade 8 student Joseph McGee took first place with his project about his uncle, Louie Montague, who was a hunter, trapper, artist and musician.
"He helped me with so many things and impacted my life quite a lot," McGee told CBC News.
"It was really interesting learning about the war and stuff," Grade 8 student Hailey Pardy said. Her project on Beaumont-Hamel took second prize.
"It makes me feel free now that I'm learning about it."
Pardy and McGee won a spot in the regional competition, which takes place in March.
