Gjoa Haven man, 21, in critical condition after being shot by police

Police were responding to reports of an armed man at the airport, walking around the community

A 21-year-old man is scheduled to be flown out of Gjoa Haven, Nunavut, for further medical treatment after he was shot by an RCMP officer Monday afternoon.
Police were responding to a report an adult male with a firearm had been at the airport. While responding, they received an additional call the man was walking around the community with a rifle.
"Officers attempted to de-escalate the situation with directions to put the firearm down," a press release reads. The man was then shot and injured by an officer on the scene.
The man is now in custody and the firearm has been recovered.
"These types of calls are notoriously unpredictable and have traditionally been challenging to manage," the press release notes.
The incident remains under investigation.
