After a Canadian Trump supporter told his parents "to go back home," poet Patrick de Belen decided to retaliate — through words.

"They told us it was all smoke and mirrors," he says in his powerful poem above, "like these slurs haven't been said before, like our countries haven't been to led to war to have people that look like us dead before."

The video is part of a series here at CBC Arts called "Poetic License," inviting artists to offer their opinions on new U.S. President-elect Donald Trump through spoken word. For de Belen, it was an opportunity to speak to the fear he and his family have been facing in the wake of the election.

"[They're] looking for brown and black skin they can white out like the snow," he continues. "They want to burn my home and birth certificate."
