Police are reminding shoppers to be mindful when manoeuvring around parking lots — whether walking or driving — after a woman was killed in front of North Hill Mall.
The woman, believed to be in her 30s, was hit by a semi-trailer in front of the northwest entrance to the mall, near the Safeway, about 8 p.m. on Wednesday.
After being pulled from underneath the vehicle, the woman was rushed to hospital, where she died.
"It's incumbent upon everybody in the parking lot, especially the pedestrian because they have the most to lose, to really watch out where they're going and watch for vehicles backing out of spaces and stuff like that," said Staff Sgt. Paul Stacey of the Calgary police traffic unit.
It's not expected any charges will result from the crash.
Craig Espey said he finds himself at the mall three or four days a week, and described the parking lot as a busy one.
"There's a fair number of people that actually use it to park here and take the transit, even though they're not supposed to," he said.
"I'm less concerned about me — it's more when I'm with my kids. I have to remind them to be careful, stay close to the cars and be vigilant when crossing."
Anyone with information is asked to call police at 403-266-1234 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
