Canmore RCMP say it was a residential break-and-enter investigation that led to the lockdown of a middle school on Tuesday afternoon.
Around 12:20 p.m. officers responded after a witness heard a "pop" from inside a home and "observed a hole in one of the windows."
Police said they could not initially determine whether a suspect was still in the house or had fled.
As a result, RCMP cordoned off the area and alerted nearby Lawrence Grassi Middle School of the incident in order to ensure students remained safe inside.
Dogs and the RCMP Emergency Response Team cleared the house without finding the suspect.
The investigation continues, and the RCMP said they are following "a number of investigative avenues."
