It could feel like –40 C with the wind chill Saturday night
Edmonton transit centres and LRT stations will remain open at night for shelter as long as extreme cold temperatures persist, the city says.
The transit stations were opened Friday night after a week of bone-chilling temperatures in the city.
On Saturday, Environment Canada issued an extreme cold warning for the Edmonton area, saying an "extreme" wind chill of around –40 C will hit central and northern Alberta during the evening and throughout the night.
The daytime temperature hovered around –26 C with the wind chill on Saturday.
Extreme cold warnings are issued when cold temperatures or wind chill increases the risk of frostbite or hypothermia. Environment Canada recommends limiting exposure to the outdoors and sheltering pets.
CBC has launched a winter clothing drive to keep Edmonton's homeless warm in the cold.
From now through to Dec. 13, CBC is asking for donations of the following:
- New socks
- New mitts/gloves
- New hats/toques
CBC is located at Edmonton City Centre Mall at 100th Street and 102nd Avenue.
The donations will be shared among the agencies which work with Edmonton's homeless population.
