Poll finds if Canadians could vote in U.S. election, 28% of Manitoba voters would support Trump
If Canadians could cast a ballot in the U.S. presidential election, Manitobans would be most likely to throw their support behind Donald Trump, according to one poll.
A nation-wide poll conducted by Mainstreet/Postmedia last weekend found that 28 per cent of Manitobans surveyed said they would vote for the controversial Republican candidate. The Prairie provinces all posted the highest levels of support for Trump with Saskatchewan at 25 per cent and Alberta at 26 per cent.
In contrast, respondents from the Maritimes and Québec would be least likely to vote for Trump, the poll suggests, with less than 13 per cent support.
Canada-wide though, the Democratic candidate would have the overwhelming support of voters, with 68 per cent of respondents saying they would vote for Hillary Clinton, while only 17 per cent said they would support Trump. The remaining 15 per cent would either vote for a third-party candidate, were undecided or would not vote.
Half of Manitobans for Clinton: another poll
Another survey with a larger sample size conducted by Winnipeg-based Prairie Research Associates (PRA) released Tuesday had another take. It suggests that half of Manitobans would vote for Hillary Clinton. Support for Trump in this poll was pegged at 12 per cent.
The PRA survey had a sample size of 800 Manitobans and was conducted between Oct. 18 and Nov. 5 while the Mainstreet/Postmedia poll surveyed 501 Manitobans.
Men vs. Women
Consistent with polls in the U.S., both polls found men more likely than women to vote for Trump.
Nationally, Mainstreet-Postmedia found over three-quarters of women would vote for Clinton, whereas 58 per cent of males said they would support her.
In Manitoba, PRA found 17 per cent of men would vote for Trump while only seven per cent of women in the province would cast a ballot for the Republican candidate.
