The St. John's IceCaps downed the Utica Comets 6-3 Wednesday at Mile One Centre to take both ends of a two-game series.
IceCaps centre Charles Hudon opened the scoring with a breakaway goal just over two minutes into the first period.
Utica left-winger Joseph LaBate tied it up 11 minutes later, but it took the IceCaps just over a minute to regain the lead when right-winger Nikita Scherbak scored an unassisted goal.
In the second, Scherbak set up Hudon's second goal of the night, but Utica tied it up before the period was out on goals from centre MIchael Chaput and right-winger Alexandre Grenier.
The third period was all IceCaps, with left-winger Bobby Farnham scoring what would hold up as the game-winner early in the frame. Left-winger Daniel Carr notched an insurance marker just over a minute later, and forward Stefan Matteau potted an empty-netter after the Comets pulled goalie Richard Bachman.
Scherbak has scored goals in the past four games and ran his point streak to five games, with five goals and two assists over that span.
The IceCaps, who improved to 5-4-1, host the league-leading Toronto Marlies on Saturday and Sunday.
