City has to order custom panel that was damaged in motor vehicle accident
The lights will be out in a part of downtown Summerside, potentially for several weeks, following a motor vehicle accident.
A spokesperson for Summerside Police said a vehicle struck an electrical power box early Sunday morning.
When police arrived on the scene the vehicle was completely engulfed in flames, but the fire department was able to get it out quickly. Police were able to locate the two occupants of the vehicle, both under 18 years of age, close by.
The male driver of the vehicle was taken to hospital by ambulance with non-life threatening injuries, while the male passenger was uninjured. The police spokesperson said it is their understanding the driver has now been released from the hospital.
Several weeks to fix
The incident happened at the parking lot for the boardwalk at the far western end of MacKenzie Drive — meaning street lighting on MacKenzie and trail lighting on the boardwalk west of the parking lot has been knocked out.
The panel was custom made and so the replacement will have to be ordered. It may take several weeks to restore power to the area.
The city is cautioning those traveling in the area to use extra caution. There are no households or traffic lights affected by the outage. The accident is still under investigation, but police say it appears speed may have been a factor.
