City, ACOA providing $396,665 combined for upgrades to VIV Field
Summerside's Queen Elizabeth Park is getting major upgrades to its Very Important Volunteer [VIV] Field with the help of funding from the city and the federal government.
On Wednesday, it was announced in a press release that Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency [ACOA] and the city provided $396,665 in total for upgrades under the Canada 150 Community Infrastructure Program. ACOA is providing $198,331 while the city is funding the remainder of the upgrades.
Expanding VIV Field
The upgrades involve expanding VIV Field to meet regulations by Softball Canada to host larger tournaments and accommodate more advanced level athletes. Other upgrades include relocating the scoreboard and fencing as well as upgrades to lighting, associated ground work and dugout refurbishment.
"These crucial upgrades will allow our city to continue to play host to major sporting championships and provide a first-class recreational venue for residents and our future ball players," said Summerside mayor Bill Martin in the press release. "This is a great example of our federal government working together with our municipal government, ensuring our city flourishes."
