'It was totally unexpected'
Island vegetable grower Eddy Dykerman has been inducted into the Atlantic Agricultural Hall of Fame.
The owner of Brookfield Gardens and Red Soil Organics in Brookfield, P.E.I., was nominated by the P.E.I. Federation of Agriculture.
"It was totally unexpected," the 59-year old farmer told CBC.
'Kind of cool'
"It was kind of cool because my dad was inducted four years ago," he added.
Dykerman started farming with his brother and father when he was 22 years old.
He's known as a leader in environmentally-responsible farming and on-farm food safety. He's also led P.E.I.'s School Healthy Snacks Initiative. Dykerman is also a strong supporter of Farmers Helping Farmers work in Kenya and a community volunteer.
Dykerman joined Rob English from New Brunswick, Paul Lomond of Newfoundland and Labrador and Nova Scotia's Casey Van de Sande at the ceremony last Thursday at the Dalhousie University Truro campus, formerly the Nova Scotia Agricultural College.
About 15 of his family members attended the ceremony with Dykerman which he said, "was a great day."
His son and nephew are also invested in the family business, which Dykerman hopes will continue long into the future.
