The gas leak that led to a massive evacuation of downtown Leamington is over, according to police.
Hundreds of businesses and homes were evacuated after an underground natural gas line erupted near the intersection of Erie and Mill streets Saturday afternoon, the Ontario Provincial Police reported.
An area of the downtown was evacuated for several hours, including homes and businesses near Erie Street North, Talbot Street East, Princess Street and Russell Street.
Union Gas identified and repaired the leak. As a result, Erie Street North has been reopened. But Mill Street West between Fox Street and Erie Street North will remain closed for about two hours as crews repair the road.
