Royal visit 2016, Day 1: The Royal Family in Victoria

Tour marks royal couple's 2nd visit to Canada as a couple and George and Charlotte's 1st

The Royal Family arrives.

On Saturday, Prince William, his wife Kate and their children, Prince George and Princess Charlotte, arrived in Victoria begin their seven-day visit to British Columbia and Yukon. The Royal Family will be based in Victoria for the duration of their tour. Here are some highlights of the first day of their visit.

George and Charlotte's first trip to Canada.

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge arrived in Victoria with their children, and the whole family wore colour-co-ordinated outfits. Prince George melted hearts during the family's arrival in his second overseas trip, and the trip is Princess Charlotte's first official tour abroad.

The welcoming committee on the tarmac.

Governor General David Johnston, Sharon Johnston, Sophie Grégoire Trudeau, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, British Columbia Premier Christy Clark and Lt.-Gov. of British Columbia Judith Guichon were on the tarmac for the Royal Family's arrival.

The B.C. Legislature welcomes William and Kate.

Hundreds of people waited to greet the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge at the B.C. Legislature building in Victoria, and William inspected the guard as he arrived at the Legislative Assembly.

William speaks at the Legislative Assembly.

"We're very much looking forward to learning about how Canadians are tackling some of the biggest challenges of the day," William told the assembly.

The royal couple signs the Golden Book.

William and Kate signed the Government of Canada's Golden Book and B.C.'s Distinguished Visitors' Book before greeting the crowd.

Royal fans wait hours to meet William and Kate.

Hundreds went to the legislature lawn to see the couple, and many waited for over five hours before the couple was scheduled to arrive. William eventually rewarded well-wishers who spent hours waiting to get a glimpse, shake hands or take a photograph.
