Bystander struck in hand when cruiser arrived at the scene, ASIRT says
The Alberta Serious Incident Response Team has launched an investigation to determine whether an RCMP cruiser may have struck and killed an injured man who had already been hit by a pickup truck on Highway 881.
RCMP were first alerted about a man walking down the middle of the northern Alberta highway around 1:15 a.m. Sunday.
While an officer was on the way, a second call came in reporting that a man had been struck by a southbound pickup truck .
People in the truck that hit the man jumped out to help him after calling police.
When the officer arrived at the scene, there were several vehicles pulled over at the side of the highway.
A man standing on the road had his hand struck by the police cruiser.
ASIRT is also trying to determine whether the police vehicle also hit the injured man, who died at the scene.
Police will investigate the initial collision involving the pickup truck.
ASIRT's investigation will focus on the RCMP officer's possible role in the collisions.
ASIRT says their investigators would like to talk to the driver of a large commercial vehicle that pulled over to help, as that person may have witnessed the initial collision.
