Dartmouth man found unconscious in jail cell in critical condition

47-year-old man arrested after someone complained of public intoxication

A 47-year-old Dartmouth man who was put in a jail cell by Halifax Regional Police on Monday was found unconscious shortly after and is now in critical condition.
The man was arrested after someone complained about public intoxication in Dartmouth, said Ron MacDonald, the director of Nova Scotia's Serious Incident Response Team.
MacDonald says the man was arrested and placed in a cell at around 10:15 p.m. on Monday.
"A while later when doing a check, [officers] noticed he was in distress," he said.
The man was taken to a hospital in Halifax.
MacDonald said the man's condition likely resulted from "self-inflicted actions" but declined to provide further details.
SIRT, which is an independent police watchdog, is called to investigate all serious incidents involving police in the province.
