As Winnipeg-based choreographer Ming Hon(external link) will tell you, there's a whole sub-section of movies best remembered for the chase scene they contain at their heart — think Casino Royale, The Dark Knight, any movie featuring Jason Bourne). So when Hon decided to create a performance completely made from the idea of pursuit, she had a ton of material to draw from.
The resulting Chase Scenes #1-58(external link), which Hon has brought to Toronto's SummerWorks(external link) festival this year, covers a surprising emotional breadth. And in this video directed by Tahiat Mahboob(external link), we find out why trying to get inside the head of both the pursuer and the pursued creates a conversation about comedy, energy, and the distance between genders.
And the whole thing plays out with real chases, in front of and through the audience, with performers simultaneously filming the action and projecting it onto huge screens (now you get the picture: Ming Hon is creating live cinematic chase scenes).
You can still catch Chase Scenes #1-58 at SummerWorks today(external link) (if you hurry - it's at 4:15 p.m.), and tomorrow evening(external link).
Watch Exhibitionists(external link) Sundays at 4:30pm (5 NT) on CBC.
