For the first time, the World Social Forum is being held in North America and Eliza Knockwood, a Mi'kmaq woman from P.E.I., is among the 50,000 people attending.
Knockwood is in Montreal and will be presenting a workshop Friday on Indigenous rights and sustainable development.
The forum was created in 2001 as an alternative to the World Economic Forum held in Davos, Switzerland.
"Well, the World Social Forum has been a really great experience in the sense that I'm meeting such a diverse group of people who are passionate about what is happening in their countries, because we're finding that we have common goals," said Knockwood.
"Social justice, peace, and indigenous equality for women -- areas that I'm really focused on experiencing and hearing here and looking at solidarity and how we can work together.
Knockwood said it is tough deciding what workshops to attend each day, with 30 being offered, including high profile speakers like Naomi Klein.
