Federal and provincial officials announced nearly $9 million in highway infrastructure improvements in P.E.I. on Tuesday afternoon.
The $8.9 million includes $5.5 million for the first phase of a Cornwall perimeter highway.
"By supporting improvements to P.E.I.'s transportation routes, we are supporting local businesses and fostering long-term prosperity in the region," Malpeque MP Wayne Easter said in a written release.
Work on phase one of the Cornwall bypass, which the province has estimated will cost upwards of $65 million, will begin as early as August 22, the joint news release states.
The work will include two new two-lane roundabouts along Route 1 between the intersections of Maypoint and Poplar Island, replacing two lighted intersections.

"Travel will become safer and more efficient on some of out province's most heavily-used roads," said P.E.I. Transportation and Infrastructure Minister Paula Biggar.
