P.E.I. passports, by the numbers

P.E.I. is the only Canadian province without a passport office

This week, Liberal MP Sean Casey renewed calls to have a passport office in P.E.I.
Currently, residents can apply for a passport through Service Canada, but for more immediate circumstances must travel to a passport office off the Island.
Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada says there aren't enough applications to warrant an office on the Island.
Here's a closer look at the numbers, from April 2015 to March 2016:
  • Total number of applications on P.E.I.: 13,666. Across the country: 4,814,971.
  • Passport applications received by the Island's four MP offices: 1,118.
  • Passport applications received by Service Canada: 8,187 (59.84 per cent of the total of applications on the Island).
  • Passport applications by Islanders made in person: 8.72 per cent in Halifax, 2.88 per cent in Fredericton.
  • 208 urgent passport applications and 403 express passport applications by Islanders.
  • Five Service Canada centres and two Canada Post offices on the Island provide passport services.
