PHILADELPHIA, PA—Bernie Sanders supporters were overjoyed yesterday as the DNC passed a last-minute proposal to allow attendees to wear Birkenstocks to the convention. Outrage had been growing all week as hundreds of Sanders supporters were forced to choose between attending the convention and buying a new pair of summer shoes.

"I never would have come here if I'd known I couldn't wear my Birks," said Sanders fan Gordon Noisey. "I only have my rubber boots for when it rains and my Birks for every other moment. I wear them when I pay my taxes, when I vote – even wore them to both my parents' funerals. So you better believe I'm wearing them into this damn place."

The DNC had become concerned that not allowing Birkenstocks would have been the final straw for already agitated Bernie supporters. After leaked emails proved the DNC's bias toward Hillary Clinton and raised questions about her position on the Trans-Pacific Partnership trade deal, revolt was in the air. Rumours began circulating of a toejam-based protest.

Cher Kelford, upon learning she couldn't wear her beloved sandals shouted, "This is the classic elitism that is destroying this country. Maybe bankers and other fat cats are okay with sweaty feet but I and millions of other Americans think it's our fundamental right to let our feet breathe."

In a plea for harmony, the party offered Doc Marten sneakers as a potential compromise and Vice President Joe Biden was even scheduled to give a speech extolling their virtues. Eventually however, DNC organizers recognized that in these desperate times, party unity was more important than sheltering convention attendees and those watching at home from truly gnarly-looking toenails.

This is the second time a national convention has enacted drastic change to its footwear guidelines. Last week, Republicans hurried in a last-minute amendment to their convention dress code allowing attendees to strap automatic rifles to their feet in place of shoes.
