The announcement that Mistaken Point was to be named a UNESCO World Heritage Site came with great deal of excitement in Portugal Cove South.
The atmosphere was a bit more subdued in Turkey, where the United Nations committee was holding its meeting.
Chairperson Lale Ulker brought down the decision without objection — and without much comment — on Sunday. It added the Mistaken Point Ecological Reserve, the site of some of the oldest multi-cellular fossils in the world, to the prestigious list of World Heritage Sites.
