Every year the H.U.N.K.S. get better and last night, for the first time, they can be counted among Winnipeg's finest sketch brands.
Like most modern troupes, they incorporate multimedia and do it very well — the show is the perfect mix of live and filmed segments. There is a surprise that I'm not supposed to spill, so I will respect their on-stage directive. What I will say, however, is that the surprise doesn't work.
Not every sketch rocket makes it to Mars. I got the sense the show is complied from a master list that maybe has less than a handful more sketches than are on display. The quintet should double the number to ensure a flawless show.
But when the sketches soar, they soar. Tim Gray, Dana Smith and Quinn Greene were on fire on opening night. Dana does a great piece about being the only woman in the cast which highlights that she is the only woman in the cast. A comedy universe with a twenty per cent female population is not an accurate representation of the world. A Wonder Woman sketch got one of the biggest laughs of the night.
The crowd ate it all up and there was a scattered standing ovation. This could be turned into a full standing ovation in the years to come if this promising troupe continue to challenge themselves.
