THREE STARS | The layers and colours and textures the puppeteers achieve is beautiful to behold
Rating: ★★★
Company: Mind of a Snail Puppet Co., Vancouver
Genre: Puppetry
Venue: 1 — John Hirsch Theatre, MTC Mainstage
And now it's time for "Back in my Day" with Granny Michelle.
Back in my day, Mind of a Snail productions did most of their work live and on stage. They had backing tracks, but they also produced many of their soundscapes live, and much more of the show was created right before the audience's very eyes, on the fly.
It is pure, adorable, shadow puppet magic wrapped in rainbows and covered in unicorns. - Michelle Palansky
Now in it's third iteration for Winnipeg Fringe, the show is more complicated, more cinematic in quality, and much of the action occurs behind the scrim, which results in a palpable drop in the shared energy between performers and audience.
That being said, if you've never seen the show before it is pure, adorable, shadow puppet magic wrapped in rainbows and covered in unicorns. Working in both macro and micro universes, the layers and colours and textures the puppeteers achieve is beautiful to behold.
That's Granny Michelle signing off.
