Fort Edmonton Park will turn into a year-round operation following a major upgrade.

More details of the project were announced Wednesday. The province had announced earlier it was providing $33.5 million to help the city of Edmonton with the improvements.

The money will fund construction of the Indigenous Peoples' Experience, a new feature to be developed with the help of Treaty 6 First Nations and the Métis Nation of Alberta.

The park will also use the funds to expand its midway and the Hotel Selkirk.

Premier Rachel Notley said supporting tourism is part of her government's plan to diversify the economy.

"Tourism is something that we have tremendous opportunities with in Alberta," she said. "And as we focus on diversifiying the economy, whatever we can do to support that industry we will do."

Construction is expected to create 455 full-time jobs. Once the expansion is complete, the park will have 57 full-time permanent jobs.

The project is expected to increase economic activity in Edmonton by $7.3 million. The province will see an economic boost of $23.3 million.
