A loose moose evaded authorities in, around, and through the St. John's harbour for three hours Tuesday night.
It took officials with the province's Forest Service Branch two tranquilizer darts and quite a bit of chasing to finally bring the yearling to safety just before 10 p.m.

The Great Newfoundland Moose Chase attracted a lot of onlookers in downtown St. John's.
On Twitter, the Royal Newfoundland Constabulary advised the public to stay away from Temperance Street as the moose was becoming stressed because of the attention.

Onlooker Chris Gaulton said he was just driving around town when he noticed a commotion in the harbour.
"I could see this object by the side of the boat thinking it was maybe a whale at first, but when I got down towards the Terry Fox monument I noticed it was a moose," he said.
"Within a half hour there was probably 60 to 70 onlookers in my area and up towards the other part of Water Street."

Gaulton said the attention startled the moose, who at that point had left the water and was back on land.
"You could see at one point the moose was just running around in circles and getting very agitated and grunting and just trying to find an escape route."
