Around twenty masked activists allegedly threw spoiled drinks at tour attendees
A real estate investment tour called Try Hamilton was disrupted by around twenty disguised anti-gentrification activists who shot spoiled beverages from water guns and held up signs equating real estate developers to predators.
One of the activists, whose identity is unknown, is being sought by police.
An anonymous, invective-laced blog post apparently written by a protest participant says they sprayed a number of attendees with sour milk from the water guns and poured a cold cup of coffee down someone's back. The masked activists carried signs with slogans like, "Developers + Investors = Predators. Defend Hamilton."
The blog post on "The Hamilton Institute" shows photographs of some activists holding signs at the event with their faces blocked out.
The incident took place near Tim Hortons Field around noon Saturday as buses were gathered to ferry attendees to various locations around Barton and Kennilworth streets for various talks and tours.
Try Hamilton was an event targeted at real estate investors from outside of Hamilton, but was also open to the public.
Police say they attempted to arrest one activist wearing a bandana after he was allegedly seen grabbing someone at the bus stop.
Police say they couldn't make that arrest because of "resistence and physical obstruction from the hostile crowd."
Following these events, a police escort of around eight to ten officers remained with the tour group for the duration of the event.
Krysta Boyer, one of Try Hamilton's principal organizers and one of the people targeted on Saturday, said that gentrification concerns are warranted. That is something she has come to believe through years of community involvement. She says she and her partners are firm believers in a "leave no one behind" approach to urban development.
