Edmonton's largest food desert just got a new oasis with the opening of the Loblaws City Market on 120th Street and 104th Avenue.
The grocery store and a new Shoppers Drug Mart are the first two businesses to open in the new Oliver Brewery District.
Danielle Hayes showed up to the soft opening of the store on Thursday to check things out. She said she usually has to walk 13 blocks to the nearest grocery store, or drive out of the core to buy food.
"This will be really handy," she said.
Groceries have been a challenge for some downtown dwellers since Sobeys on 104th Street and Family Foods further west on Jasper Avenue closed in 2014.
Since then, a few smaller spots have cropped up to fill the void, including the larger Planet Organic location on 121st Street.

The 40,000 sq. ft. City Market boasts a giant wall of cheese, and a mural of the Brewery District. Like other City Market locations, it's privately owned.
The store is holding a grand opening from 8 a.m. to 11 p.m. on Friday with prizes and giveaways.
A new MEC store and Goodlife Fitness are expected to open in the Brewery District in a few months.
