Some specifics on P.E.I.'s declining school population
As part of its open data project, the P.E.I. government released school enrolment figures going back to 1999.
Here is some of what we found.
1. There are fewer schools
- Number of schools on P.E.I. in 1999: 64
- Number of schools on P.E.I. in 2015: 56
2. There are fewer students
- Total school population in 1999: 23,460
- Total school population in 2015: 18,842
3. Not all schools are seeing enrolment decline
- Number of schools with growing enrolment since 1999: 9
- Schools that have seen growing enrolment are: L.M. Montgomery Elementary School, Stratford Elementary, Eliot River Elementary School, West Royalty Elementary School, Miscouche Consolidated School, Mt. Stewart Consolidated School, Parkside Elementary School, Souris Regional High School and Westwood Primary School.
4. Charlottetown Rural continues to have the most students
- Largest school in 1999: Charlottetown Rural High School, 1053
- Largest school in 2015: Charlottetown Rural High School, 858
5. The smallest school has 50 students
- Smallest school in 1999: Grand Tracadie, 55
- Smallest school in 2015: Georgetown Elementary, 50
6. The student population is seeing less of a decline in the Charlottetown area
- Charlottetown-area schools population, 1999-2015: -6.3%
- Other schools population, 1999-2015: -26%
