Health Canada is warning Canadians not to use Empowerplus, saying there's no evidence the mixture of vitamins and minerals is safe.

The product, also known as EM Power, is being sold as a treatment for mental illnesses such as bipolar disorder, attention deficit disorder, schizophrenia, autism and Tourette's syndrome.

Empowerplus, sold by Truehope Nutritional Support Ltd., is not approved for sale in Canada.

Health Canada's Web site says the department has identified "risks associated with the use of Empowerplus," but it doesn't provide details. The government does not know if the product is safe or effective, the site says.

Two years ago, the agency told the Alberta-based company to stop selling the mixture. It ruled that the supplement is a drug and must go through the same testing as other medicines.

But orders continue to roll into the company's headquarters.

The product is shipped from the U.S. to bypass Health Canada's prohibition.

On May 28, Truehope sued Health Canada, alleging that the agency and federal Health Minister Anne McLellan acted outside their authority, violated the law and abused their discretion by seizing shipments of the product.
