Bryce Krawczyk used to be the "skinny kid," but the the 105-kilogram powerlifting athlete has come a long way since then.
In July, he set a world deadlift record for his weight category, and though someone broke it, he's hoping take his title back at the International Powerlifting Federation World Championships(external link) June 19 to 26.

He hopes to do it officially as just one of two Calgarians who will compete at the world championships in Texas next week.
"The goal is to hopefully end up on the podium and maybe take that world record back to Canada," he said.
When he's not training himself, Krawczyk spots others as the head coach at Calgary Barbell(external link).
Krawczyk, whose girlfriend also lifts, said he's encouraged to see a fairly even split of men and women at his training facility.
While Krawczyk recognizes that his sport receives relatively less attention outside the immediate lifting community, he said he's motivated by powerlifting's objectivity and opportunity for self-improvement.
"It's about competing with yourself. When you see that progress, it's very objectively measured. You can't argue with that."
