MISSISSAUGA, ON—The international comedy community is still reeling from an innovative and revolutionary stand-up set on Sunday night at Guffawz where Spencer Mitchell, 27, courageously launched into the topic of his penis just thirteen seconds into his act.
"He got into the mechanics of like, you know, how his penis works, what it likes, what it doesn't like, what it did today, and how being single makes it do some pretty zany things!" explains audience member Jasmine Khan. "I'm pretty sure I'm thinking of the right guy. It may have been the guy who went up after him. Or any one of the nine guys who went up before him."
Armed with nothing but a plaid shirt, worn out Converse sneakers, and a healthy confidence that his audience was eager to hear about a man's fraught and anxious relationship with his genitalia for the first time ever, Mitchell devoted his entire 10-minute set to his pornography preferences, recent masturbatory activities, and the various frustrations he has trying to find his next sexual partner.
"There's this fucking awesome moment where I ask the audience if anyone's on Tinder," Mitchell says from the bar after the show, where he pays for a Molson Canadian in nickels. "And then when no one responds I shout that they're all liars!"
"You just wouldn't hear that joke five years ago," he explains. "Comedy has to evolve. It has to be innovative. It has to challenge people."
Despite the exhilaration and breathless excitement he exhibited when he got off the stage, Mitchell says there was one obvious low point of the evening.
"This chick comedian did a joke about getting a bikini wax. And it's like, come on, lady. I've never had a bikini wax. I hate to break it to you, but most dudes haven't. If your comedy isn't relatable, what are you even doing up there?"
