MONTREAL, QC—Canadian indie rock darlings Arcade Fire surprised fans this week with the announcement that they're currently in the process of recording a new album, due for release next year. Adding to the buzz, the band has announced that the album will feature at least one appearance by every single musical instrument currently known to humanity.
In a note posted on its website the band wrote: "We're looking to re-contextualize the aural experience of conventional rock n' roll into something variegated and kaleidoscopic. This record will be a celebration, a tale of tonalities told via the lute, the lyre, the crumhorn, and the Zimbabwean rattle known as a hosho."
Over the past year the Arcade Fire has been critical of the growing prevalence and popularity of electronic music, most notably at Coachella where they dedicated a song to "all the bands playing instruments."
"This album is for every kid in a garage somewhere jamming away on a willow flute, jew's harp, contrabass or hunting horn," said front man Win Butler, who gave a brief phone interview while taking a break from recording Northumbrian smallpipes tracks in an abandoned grain silo.
"Music isn't about computers, man. It's about the pulalu, the muchosac, the Roman tuba and the whip. It's about finger cymbals, slit drums and American notched gourds. Anyone can push a button, but who can play a folgerphone, djembe, or mittlealtersackpfeife? The juxtaposition of standard rock n' roll instruments like guitars, drums and clapped hands with glass marimbas, erhus and shofars will ultimately show both producers and fans of EDM what real music is all about."
In addition to the grain silo, the as-yet-untitled album is currently being recorded in several churches around North America with a planned release date set for sometime in the Fall of 2016.

Here's a comprehensive list of all the instruments the album will feature.
