TORONTO, ON—Pat McGeachie, a 28-year-old IT consultant whose hobbies include fixed-gear cycling, making zines, and listening to podcasts, has recently come out as a gigantic Toronto Blue Jays fan. "I'm a die-hard," says McGeachie. "Our team is so sick. Tulo, Price, Encornation [sic], and all the rest, It's no wonder that I've loved the Jays my whole life!"
Work friends have been surprised by their colleague's sudden obsession. "In the six years I've known Pat, he has brought up baseball exactly zero times," says one co-worker. "Then yesterday he tells me that his parents named him after Pat Borders. When I tried to tell him that he was born two years after Borders was drafted, he started singing OK Blue Jays right in my face."
"Yeah, I don't buy it," says another employee at the office McGeachie works at. "He said he was a huge Jays guy, so I tried talking to him about some advanced statistics. I said something about Bautista's CT%, and I can tell he doesn't know anything about baseball because he started repeating these vague slogans, saying things like 'you gotta love those boys in blue,' and 'it's not over till it's over.'"
Some have been more welcoming of his sudden obsession. "This Blue Jays thing is bizarre," commented longtime friend Luke Hendricksen, "but at least he's not talking about fixed-gear bicycle maintenance any more. That was the worst."
When asked if he was just jumping on the bandwagon, McGeachie said, "Is that a good thing? If so, then yes, I've been jumping on bandwagons ever since I was a child."
