Duo talks about performing in Newfoundland, and upcoming international tours
Familiar names for music lovers in Newfoundland and Labrador, Ben Caplan and Taryn Kawaja, are wrapping up their Newfoundland tour in Corner Brook Wednesday night.
The indie music duo will be performing at the Rotary Arts Centre starting at 8 p.m.
Then, they'll be heading back to Halifax before starting a North American tour before heading overseas for more gigs.
But ahead of their final Newfoundland performance of the year, Ben Caplan and Taryn Kawaja caught up with Corner Brook Morning Show's Bernice Hillier.
Here's some of what they had to say.
Q. For both of you this is the end of your Newfoundland tour. How has it been?
Ben: It's been marvelous. It's so great to get back onto this island. Taryn is always encouraging me to get over and visit her beautiful homeland, so it was just really great to have the opportunity to travel around the island.
Taryn: He comes kicking and screaming, but then he's happy that he came.
Q. How do you feel about coming home and playing a show with your partner?
Taryn: It's great. It's always a little bit awkward to play in front of people that you know and people that know you and you have a relationship with, but it's also very rewarding. There's the counterbalance of it's easier to tell stories to people who have no idea who you are, but in my music I really strive for relatability, and that's much easier for people in a culture that you understand.
Q. Do you perform together in the show tonight, or do you do acts separately?
Ben: We do both, all of the above. Taryn will start off the night with her own kind of compositions and songs and then we'll take the stage together. After a little while I'll kick Taryn off so I can enjoy the audience to myself, then she'll be back on again.
Q. Taryn, you've also been working on your debut album. Tell me a bit about that.
Taryn: I have been working on my debut album for a long time. We've just been touring non stop and it's gone to the back burner over and over again. But everything works out in time and in its own way and I know that when I do get around to it, the time that it has taken and the landscapes I've seen and the time that I've had to actually really think consciously about all the decisions I want to make, it will work out in the end. My plan is in December, once we're off the road finally, maybe, for a second, to do it then.
Q. With live music you don't have the time to over think things, but when you're in a recording studio you deal with all the minutiae of how you'd really like it to sound.
Ben: Absolutely. The live thing is great because you're limited to the arrangement choices that you're able to accomplish with whatever budgets and circumstances are presented in front of you, but arranging it itself just becomes a massive question once you go into the studio. On my record I got carried away, hired some 35 musicians or something like that. I encouraged Taryn not to go that crazy on her record.
Q. Taryn has talked about what it's like to be back here playing for the home crowd, but what's it like for you?
Ben: For me it doesn't feel stressful or anything like that. It's nice to be in such a beautiful place. Our last show up at Swirsky's (2014) was brilliant, we played a double nighter and had a really great time over there, so for me I'm just looking forward to performing for the first time at the Rotary Arts Centre. It's a beautiful space and just getting to know more people here, hearing more stories about Taryn as a baby and all the trouble you got into.
Q. Where do you go after the Newfoundland tour is complete?
Taryn: I'm gonna stick around here for a few days, and then we're gonna make our way back to Halifax and I'm gonna do a little recording project there. Supposed to spend a couple of weeks off — totally off — but this came up, so I'm really excited about it.
Ben: The studio beckons.
Taryn: Yes, and then we do a cross North America tour and head to Europe after that for a few months.
Ben: We've got another 80 shows left this year. So, it will be busy.
