Youth faces 2nd-degree murder charge in stepmother's stabbing death in Forest Lawn

Family get-together ended in late-night dispute, police say
A 16-year-old boy with an extensive police record has been charged with second-degree murder in connection with the stabbing death of his stepmother in Forest Lawn.
Officers were called to a four-unit apartment building in the 1800 block of 42nd Street S.E. at about 11 p.m. Tuesday, where they found a woman in critical condition. She later died in hospital.
An autopsy on Wednesday confirmed the 33-year-old was fatally stabbed.
Police say several family members and friends had gathered at the house for a party, which ended in an alcohol-fuelled argument and violent dispute.
Officers took three people into custody, later releasing two of them without charges.
Extensive record
This isn't the first brush with the law for the young man.
In May 2014, he was sentenced to one-year probation for assault with a weapon. Two months later, in July, he was sentenced for robbery, receiving an additional six-month probation.
The following March he was sentenced for mischief, damage and shoplifting charges. And in June 2015, the youth was sentenced to one-year probation for robbery.
He also had DNA taken for convictions of assault with a weapon and carrying a concealed weapon in March 2016.
There were also several instances of "failure to attend" and "failure to comply" in between convictions and sentencings.
The youth is set to appear in court on June 16. He is being held in custody.
Domestic conflict calls up 10%
This is Calgary's 10th homicide of 2016.
Police in Calgary responded to nearly 19,000 domestic conflict calls last year, up 10 per cent from 2014.
According to the Calgary Domestic Violence Collective (CDVC), such abuse often escalates over time, making it important that victims seek help immediately.
"CDVC partner organizations are helping to develop a community of care for anyone experiencing domestic or sexual violence, or who know someone in need of help," the group said in a release.
CDVC urges anyone experiencing domestic abuse to call 403-234-7233 (SAFE).
