The lodge, located in Eldon, east of Charlottetown on P.E.I.'s South Shore, is adding 31 nursing care beds.
"The demand for nursing care beds is increasing at the Gillis Lodge," owner Douglas MacKenzie said in a news release.
"Many Islanders are waiting in hospital or being transferred to other facilities while waiting for a vacancy."
The lodge currently has 68 nursing care beds and 13 community care beds.

More new facilities

In addition to the new beds, the expansion will include a safety unit with access to a courtyard, a bathing room, laundry facility and a special events room.
"Expanding the Gillis Lodge will help meet an increasing need for nursing care in the southern Kings and Queens areas," he said.
The Gillis Lodge will request a nursing bed licence for the new beds once construction is complete.
