Thirteen workers at the only daily newspaper in St. John's are being laid off, union representatives say.
Photographer Keith Gosse, who is also the vice-president of Unifor Local 441G, says that 11 unionized staff and two management jobs are being cut as a result of continuing restructuring at The Telegram.
The layoffs are a result of broader cuts by the newspaper's parent company TC Media and are among 65 jobs cut across Canada.
"Media in general, not just in this province or in Canada or in North America, it's suffering all over the world," said Gosse. "Newspapers have been hit harder than other media, but it is basically a worldwide phenomenon."

A public loss

The cuts at The Telegram include the entire layout department, which employed eight page builders, and two reporters.
Gosse said the loss will make it harder for reporters to do their jobs.
"Part of our job is to report on what's going on in communities and cities around us," he said.
"I think that the less reporters you have, whether it's newspaper, tv or radio, it doesn't really mater, the less people's stories get out there."

A source told CBC News that the page layout work will be moved to Prince Edward Island, and that the final day of work for laid off employees will be June 24.
Gosse added that the last years at the newspaper have been turbulent, and even with 30 years experience as a photographer, he's still worried about his job.

'Very hard day'

TC Media, which owns and manages The Telegram and other newspapers around the province, said Monday was a "very hard day for a lot of good people."
"Our media company is challenged, like all others...by shrinking revenues and rising costs as readers and advertisers choose from among many more digital media options," said Mike Therien, Senior Director, Content Strategy.
Still, Therien said he believed The Telegram will "adapt quickly to the change and challenge."
He said the paper will "be increasing our focus in coming weeks and months on bringing valuable local content to readers on web and mobile devices."
