'Motorcycle operators will rev their engines, it becomes quite distracting or annoying to some people'
Island RCMP say they plan to crack down on motorcycle noise this year.
Straight pipes and mufflers without baffles cause excessive noise that bothers some people, said RCMP Cpl. Scott Stevenson.
"Motorcycle operators will rev their engines, it becomes quite distracting or annoying to some people," he said. "We've gotten a number of complaints about this over the years."
This year, police are developing a strategy to make sure motorcycle owners obey the rules set out by the Highway Traffic Act.
"We are basically putting a strategy together to conduct roadside checks on these types of bikes that are emitting too many decibels, contrary to the Highway Traffic Act," Stevenson said.
Officers will be stopping people on noisy motorcycles to make sure their bikes are in compliance with the act.
"The legislation was passed, now we want to make people aware of it, and people that need to have their motorcycle inspected, they will be," Stevenson said.
