Details on two new committees designed to give Islanders a stronger voice when it comes to their own health care system were released Thursday by Health and Wellness Minister Rob Henderson.

The new Community Health Engagement Committees will serve the Island based on federal electoral riding boundaries.

"The two new committees will give Islanders a stronger voice in their health care system," said Henderson in a release.

"They will encourage more community engagement in health and wellness, and bring a greater community perspective to the development and delivery of health services across the province."

The western committee will serve the Egmont and Malpeque ridings and the eastern committee will have representatives from the Malpeque, Charlottetown and Cardigan zones.

Islanders interested in serving on the committees must apply before June 15th on the Engage PEI website.
Each committee will have nine to 12 members, including up to nine residents of the region and one representative of the three hospital foundations in that region.

The committees will not be making any decisions but will provide feedback to the health minister on health issues and services in their area and their thoughts on provincial strategies.

"Islanders have a long and proud tradition of community involvement in their hospitals and the new councils will allow them to further engage in their health system," Henderson added.
