Halifax Regional Council rejected a motion Tuesday to expedite heritage status for the Cleveland Estate on Young Avenue.
Major demolition work resumed Monday, after a brief work stop order regarding safety precautions for workers on the site.
"The roof is gone, the third floor is gone, and the front stained glass got torn out this afternoon," said Councillor Waye Mason.
"I'm actually going to vote no on the motion and I urge you to as well," Mason told council. "There's no point in pursuing it at this time."
Councillor David Hendsbee, who put forward the motion agreed.
"This might be closing the barn door after the horse is gone," he said.
Hendsbee noted the developer had intended to save 25 per cent of the property to incorporate into the new building.
