Holland College president Brian McMillan has been charged with driving under the influence of alcohol, according to a statement released by the college Thursday afternoon.
The statement goes on to say that McMillan "is remorseful and takes full responsibility" for the incident, which took place last weekend.
"Dr. McMillan contacted me immediately and I convened a meeting of the board of governors," Holland College board chair Kent Scales said in the release.
"Dr. McMillan is taking full responsibility for his actions and the board remains confident in his leadership. Moreover, this incident was completely out of character for the president that we have worked with for the past 11 years."
CBC News tried to confirm the statement with McMillan by phone and email but has not received a response. The senior executive assistant in his office said he wouldn't be responding to the statement on Thursday.
As of Thursday afternoon, no charge against McMillan had been filed in P.E.I. Provincial Court.
