37th annual music extravaganza happens July 21 to 24
The Calgary Folk Festival has unveiled its 2016 lineup, which will feature 69 artists from 16 countries on eight stages at Prince's Island Park this summer.
The 37th annual celebration draws together the diverse musical traditions of Mauritania, Korea, New Zealand, Australia, the UK, Ethiopia, the United States and Canada.
Well-known Canadian artists Whitehorse, Ian Tyson and Corb Lund and the Hurtin' Albertans will also take the stage.
Other highlights include:
- The New Pornographers, who will play the festival for the first time.
- Swedish singer-songwriter The Tallest Man on Earth.
- Afro-Venezuelan powerhouse Betsayda Machado, touring outside Venezuela for the first time.
- Pompadour-donning, mandolin-picking country artist Marty Stuart.
"We have upped the experiential ante," said Kerry Clarke, artistic director.
This year's festival will also include an expanded beer garden, an on-site halfpipe for skateboarders and word-based art displayed throughout the festival grounds.
The event runs July 21 to 24 and early bird tickets are available now.
