Mark Smich's lawyer has begun his cross-examination of his client's ex-girlfriend, a day after Marlena Meneses detailed their stormy relationship.
At the trial of two men accused of killing Hamilton man Tim Bosma, Thomas Dungey was out to present positive parts of the relationship: how Smich encouraged Meneses to go back to school and helped get her off cocaine. The questioning also touched on her distrust of co-accused Dellen Millard.
Smich, 28, of Oakville, Ont., and Millard, 30, of Toronto are charged with first-degree murder. Both have pleaded not guilty.
Meneses, 22, told Ontario Superior Court in Hamilton earlier this week that she wanted to marry Smich and have his child, even though he was abusive and wanted her to become a stripper to help support him.
Bosma, a 32-year-old father of one who lived in the suburban Ancaster area, vanished May 6, 2013, after taking two men on a test drive of a pickup truck he was trying to sell.
Last week, Meneses testified that Smich told her Millard shot and killed Bosma.
Meneses said she hasn't spoken to Smich since he was taken into custody. Meneses was arrested at the same time, but was never charged.
